Every year on May 17, communities around the world mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, widely known as IDAHOBIT. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the discrimination, violence, and exclusion faced by LGBTQ+ people globally.

In 2026, the theme “At the Heart of Democracy” reminds us that democracy is strongest when every person, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity, is seen, protected, and given equal opportunity to participate in society.

For many queer people, especially lesbian women and other underrepresented voices within the LGBTQ+ community, visibility is still an act of courage.

What Does IDAHOBIT Mean?

IDAHOBIT stands for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. It is observed annually on May 17 to commemorate the day homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organisation’s classification of mental disorders in 1990.

Since then, the day has become a global moment for advocacy, education, storytelling, and community building.

Today, IDAHOBIT is recognised in more than 130 countries, with organisations, activists, and allies using the day to spotlight issues affecting LGBTQ+ communities, including:

  • Discrimination and hate crimes

  • Barriers to healthcare and education

  • Workplace inequality

  • Mental health challenges

  • Lack of legal protections

  • Erasure of lesbian and queer women’s experiences

Understanding the Importance of IDAHOBIT 2026

The 2026 theme, “At the Heart of Democracy,” highlights a simple truth: democracy cannot fully exist when people are excluded because of who they are. Across the world, LGBTQ+ people continue to face censorship, violence, and systemic discrimination. In many places, queer communities are still denied the right to safely gather, speak openly, or access opportunities equally.

This is why days like IDAHOBIT remain important. They create space for visibility, dialogue, and action.

For organisations like SHÉLA Global CIC, the day is also an opportunity to centre lesbian lived experiences that are often overlooked in wider conversations. Representation matters, and community matters even more.

How You Can Support IDAHOBIT

Supporting IDAHOBIT does not always require large campaigns or public statements. Small actions can also create impact.

Here are a few meaningful ways to support LGBTQ+ communities during IDAHOBIT 2026:

  • Educate yourself on LGBTQ+ issues and histories

  • Support queer-led organisations and community initiatives

  • Amplify LGBTQ+ voices and stories

  • Challenge discriminatory language and behaviour

  • Create safer and more inclusive spaces

  • Listen to lived experiences without judgment

Moving Forward Together

IDAHOBIT is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder that equality, safety, and dignity should never be conditional.

As conversations around democracy, inclusion, and human rights continue to evolve, queer voices deserve to remain at the centre, not the margins.

At SHÉLA Global CIC, we remain committed to building intentional spaces where lesbian women can connect, share their stories, and feel visible.

Because every story deserves space to exist openly.
