Representation Matters: Why Visibility Is Important

For many people within lesbian, bisexual, and queer communities, growing up without visible role models or representation can create feelings of isolation. When identities are rarely reflected in media, cultural institutions, or leadership spaces, it becomes harder for individuals to imagine their own possibilities.

Representation plays a crucial role in shaping how individuals understand themselves and the world around them.

Visibility helps to counter this.

When LBQ women and non-binary individuals are visible in storytelling, leadership, and community spaces, it expands the narrative of who belongs and who can thrive. It also challenges stereotypes and encourages broader society to recognise the diversity within LGBTQ+ communities. Meaningful representation allows individuals to see experiences that resonate with their own realities rather than simplified or tokenised portrayals.

Representation is not simply about presence; it is about authenticity.

At SHÉLA, we aim to contribute to this visibility by creating platforms that centre lived experiences. Through storytelling, research, and community engagement, we work to ensure that LBQ voices are heard and valued. Greater visibility can lead to stronger communities, more inclusive conversations, and a deeper understanding of the diversity that exists within LGBTQ+ spaces.
